Assistant Director, Veterinary Care

The Assistant Director of Fish Medicine is responsible for overseeing the fish medicine program, including but not limited to quarantine protocols, routine health analyses, emergency responses, etc. This role manages veterinary staff, coordinates treatments, and ensures that all animal health-related protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are implemented effectively. Additionally, the Assistant Director oversees the Environmental Monitoring program for all habitats within RWS, and the Environmental Health Laboratory operations, ensuring compliance with water quality laboratory standards. This position plays a key role in maintaining optimal animal health, staff safety, and guest experience by upholding the highest standards in veterinary care and environmental management.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the preventive medicine program for the fish collection, including quarantine procedures, health assessments, and diagnostic testing.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for animal health-related matters, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.
- Implement and enforce animal care protocols and SOPs in tandem with RWS standards.
- Ensure all research and health studies are conducted to the highest scientific and ethical standards.
- Direct and oversee the Environmental Monitoring program, ensuring timely and accurate analysis of water, air, and soil quality across all habitats.
- Ensure compliance with the current Water Quality Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures.
- Review and interpret environmental data to support and maintain a healthy aquatic environment that meets the needs of the animal collection and the safety of staff and guests.
- Develop and refine strategies for continuous improvement in fish medicine, environmental monitoring, and biosecurity.
- Collaborate with external institutions and regulatory agencies to stay abreast of advancements in aquatic animal health and environmental science.
- Serve as a spokesperson to guests and various media as required.
- Conduct postmortem examinations and analysis to determine the cause of an animal’s death.
- Supervise, train, and mentor veterinarians, veterinary technicians, water or environmental analysts, interns, clinical attachments, etc.
Requirements
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree.
- Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in fish medicine.
- Ability to teach and explain complex medical procedures to the staff.
- Ability to conduct applied clinical research and to present research findings at conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.
- Ability to run laboratory procedures.
- Understands Life Support System management for large oceanariums.
- Demonstrate the skills and attributes of an experienced animal caregiver with professionalism, compassion, and efficiency.
- Good problem solving abilities and a team player.
