Overview

The Asian Languages and Cultures (ALC) atthe National Institute of Education in Singapore comprises theChinese, Malay, and Tamil Divisions. ALC's vision is to worktowards the mission of NIE and establish ALC as a Centre ofExcellence for Chinese, Malay and Tamil Languages, Literature,Culture and Education. We aim to nurture excellentteacher-researchers devoted to the development and promotion ofmother tongue language education, Asian values and cultures aspillars of Singapore's national identity and harmony. Studentteachers who enrol in our programmes can expect to receive a firmacademic foundation in content knowledge of their area studies aswell as current knowledge in curriculum and pedagogy. ALC'sresearch places emphasis on high-impact interdisciplinary content,pedagogical innovation, challenging existing theories and extendingthe prevalent boundary of Asian studies.

ALCinvites suitably qualified applicants to apply for a facultyposition in its Malay language and culture division. The Malaydivision of ALC provides training for Malay language teachersthrough both pre-service and professional development programmes inSingapore.

Requirements
  • Applicantsmust have a doctoral degree in Linguistics, preferably with astrong interest not only in their specialized field/s oflinguistics but also in at least one of the following: translation,bilingualism, first/second language acquisition, teaching Malay asa mother tongue/second language
  • Extensiveexperience and expertise in research in the abovefields
  • Native or near-native competence in oraland written Malay and English
  • Demonstratestrong ability for effective undergraduate and graduate levelteaching
  • Sufficient knowledge of the Singaporecurriculum and the Singapore education system
  • Adegree or diploma in education ispreferred
  • Individuals with exceptional promisefor or a proven record of research achievements in the field ofemerging technologies such as Adaptive Learning powered by AI ispreferred.


Responsibilities
  • Leador collaborate on funded research projects and maintain a strongresearch and publication record
  • Teachundergraduate and graduate level courses, including academicsupervision of undergraduate and graduate student researchprojects
  • Supervise and mentor undergraduatestudent teachers in their school teachingpractice
  • Build connections with the local andglobal professional community
  • Undertake anyadministrative duties required as exigencies of theservice

(For Associate Professorlevel) Mentoring of young faculty members and serve in the NIE/NTUcommittees, and offer professional services to schools, theMinistry of Education and other public education-relatedorganizations on a requestbasis.
