We insure approximately 340 million gross tons worldwide across all sectors - approximately 20% of the the global owned fleet.


Opportunity:


We have an interesting opportunity for an Underwriter to work within our office in Singapore to underwrite both new and existing business.


The club's Coastal and Inland class (focused on small craft and previously known as London Class) generates annual premium income of approximately $24m, predominantly within Europe.

The class expanded into Asia in 2021 using Singapore as a base to grow operations in Asia.

The Asia class now has 55 members and we need to expand the team to service this business as well as generating new business.

We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys what they do and has a determined 'can do' attitude.

A confident communicator, you should also be able to challenge and influence at all levels, and liaise and communicate effectively with internal and external partners.


What will you be doing?:

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Responsible for the underwriting and renewal of Coastal & Inland accounts within Asia under the overall direction of the Head of Underwriting, Asia Pacific and in conjunction with the existing Underwriter, Coastal & Inland.
  • Reports on all matters to the Head of Underwriting, Asia Pacific and in addition will report to Head of Underwriting, Coastal & Inland, on professional underwriting matters in accordance with agreed underwriting guidelines.
  • To develop and identify new business opportunities in Asia in accordance with the Coastal & Inland business plan and risk appetite.
  • To travel as required across Asia to achieve business development targets.
  • To develop and foster relationships with producing brokers throughout the region.
  • Responsible for ensuring the prompt and accurate production and processing of entry documentation and debiting by the underwriting team.
  • To be jointly responsible along with the existing Underwriter, Coastal & Inland, for the Asian Coastal & Inland budget and reports under the direction of the Head of Underwriting, Asia Pacific.
  • Jointly responsible for organising the circulation to the Head of Underwriting, Asia Pacific of quotations in accordance with procedures.
  • Jointly responsible for supporting the placement of reinsurance for members in the Coastal & Inland class through collaboration with the reinsurance department.
  • Jointly responsible for the analysis and monitoring of underwriting trends and record deterioration.
  • Reports on all vessels attaching on a weekly basis to the Head of Underwriting, Asia Pacific.
  • To ensure full liaison and communication with claims staff.
  • To ensure full liaison and communication with the loss prevention team.

About you:

Essential Skills/Qualifications/Experience

  • A solid grounding in marine insurance, 7 years minimum, ideally with P&I underwriting experience in the small craft sector. A broker may also be suitable, should they have the required market knowledge and the ability to learn fast.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and be motivated and driven to succeed.
  • Willingness to travel on business.
