The Power Systems Group develops Digital Motors, Battery Packs and other core technologies for our products.

Within the group, the Head of Power Electronics & Energy Storage leads a diverse department of specialist hardware and software engineers based in Malmesbury (UK), Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.

They are responsible for the design, development and verification of novel power electronics systems (including motor drives) and advanced battery management systems.


About the role:


The Head of Power Electronics & Energy Storage is a technical team leader who grows the organisation in line with the long-term business needs - recruiting, coaching and developing our people, & building supporting infrastructure within our processes and our toolsets.

The department head creates the department's long-term vision, and sets the annual targets.

The Head of Power Electronics & Energy Storage makes priority decisions, and enables their teams to perform at their best.

They are the leader of an engineering department and therefore take accountability for the quality, safety and timeliness of the department's work.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the team to deliver novel power electronics solutions and battery management systems into mass production on time and meeting all key engineering requirements.
  • Accountable for ensuring the team meet agreed milestone timelines, with high levels of safety, quality & technical rigour.
  • Make technical decisions within the department, and influence device/hardware sourcing decisions whenever required.
  • Review and influence early technology concept development
  • Set the vision and direction for the team, including annual goals and objectives.
  • Create a lean and effective organisation. Set priorities and manage resources to maximise value for Dyson; keeping spend to budget & eliminating waste.
  • Recruit and retain talent. Provide guidance to people managers and manage performance. Recognise great work, and develop our people.
  • Continually improve and optimise facilities, toolsets & processes within the team.
  • Play a key role in the RDD leadership community. Manage stakeholder expectations whilst encouraging collaboration between functions and leading teams with a 'Dyson' mindset being different, authentic and pioneering.
  • Be an active participant in the Power Systems leadership team, working closely with the other functional leaders, Project and Design Managers to successfully manage our technology portfolio.

About you:

  • A degree in electronic engineering or similar discipline.
  • Proven track record in the design and development of motor drives, battery management systems and/or other power electronics systems.
  • Proven team leadership abilities. Excellent people management skills and experience of successfully delivering through others.
  • Proven ability to orchestrate work across a number of different projects and platforms simultaneously.
  • Ability to develop long term plans and inspire others to deliver the department's vision & strategy.
  • A fast and enthusiastic learner.
  • Proven ability to work globally across countries, time zones and cultures.
  • Strong desire to continuously transform and improve our development methods advocating virtual engineering tools and striving for design excellence.
  • Credibility at Exec level with the ability to build broad networks internally and externally. A role model collaborator.
  • Proven ability to coach, mentor and develop people.
  • Can manage performance and resolve conflicts.
