Overall Purpose of this Post:

To provide whole school leadership of Safeguarding and Child Protection at SJI International.

The Assistant Principal (Safeguarding Lead) is a whole school position responsible for overseeing safeguarding and child protection at SJI International.

They are line managed by the Vice Principal (Wellbeing and Achievement) and report directly to the Vice Principal (Wellbeing and Achievement) for all child protection cases that meet the threshold of being escalated to the Ministry of Social and Families (MSF), Child Protection Service (CPS) or the police.

They work in collaboration with the Vice Principal (Wellbeing and Achievement) and Deputy Safeguarding Lead (DSL), Deputy DSLs and the safeguarding team to ensure systems, processes and resources are in place to ensure the safeguarding of all students.

They lead the safeguarding team to ensure policies, procedures and training of all staff are successfully implemented and followed.

They will ensure SJI International adheres to Singapore's Child Protection legislation and guidance; meets CIS safeguarding standards and implements best practice according to international safeguarding standards issued by the International Taskforce on Child Protection.


Summary of job tasks:

This job description serves as an initial outline of the possible expectations. However, additional roles and responsibilities may be required, as outlined by the Principal.

  • To maintain and review the whole school policy for Safeguarding and Child Protection, and ensure it is available publicly.
  • To line manage and provide leadership to the following leaders and teams: the Head of Counselling, the Wellbeing Counselling team, the St Andrew's Hall Boarders and Boarding team.
  • To ensure that all aspects of safeguarding supports the School's mission, vision and values, aligns with best practice internationally and is culturally sensitive and responsive.
  • To foster effective schoolcommunity and international relations by being an active member of the Singapore Safeguarding Network and other international networks as appropriate.
  • To lead and deliver safeguarding training to all staff on a regular basis, including the induction of all new staff, delivering specialist training and engaging with external professional development opportunities.
  • To ensure the upkeep and quality implementation of all systems, processes, procedures and policies related to safeguarding.
  • To evaluate the quality of safeguarding provision and lead the implementation of quality assurance measures to ensure that strategic objectives are met.
  • To regularly analyse safeguarding data and provide termly reports to key stakeholders.
  • To foster a collaborative culture of safeguarding through leadership of the HS safeguarding team and ensure effective clinical supervision for DSLs and members of the team, as needed.
  • To collaborate with the CPOMS Administrator to ensure the effective use of CPOMS and CPOMS Staff Safe for consistent, accurate and secure record keeping.
  • To act as primary communication/public relations liaison regarding safeguarding issues or inquiries from all members of the community, including students on expeditions and trips. This includes being available, on occasion, to respond to highlevel safeguarding concerns during evenings, weekends and school holidays.
  • To manage all external referrals to Police, MSF, CPS etc. and use the Sector-Specific Screening Guide (SSSG) and Child Abuse Reporting Guide (CARG) to inform decision making.
  • To monitor the staff wellbeing survey and respond to staff safeguarding concerns including investigation, reporting and signposting to support resources.
  • To promote collaboration with parents, carers and families in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, including where families may be facing challenging circumstances.
  • To actively support the implementation of safer recruitment practices across all areas of the school.
To collaborate with the Vice Principal (Wellbeing and Achievement) and other members of SLT on the development, implementation and evaluation of strategic goals that drive the best practices of safeguarding
