Overview ofPosition

Vascular technologistsare a highly specialized group of allied health professionals whoperform non-invasive studies using ultrasound and blood pressuremeasurements to assess for vascular diseases or disorders. They areimportant members of the vascular and surgical team; they assistphysicians in the planning and management of a patient'streatment.

Local vascular technologists aretrained on-the-job. They typically work with a high level ofindependence as they are required to compile information gatheredfrom a series of vascular related examinations to give apreliminary impression for the physicians. In order to do this,vascular technologists are required to have adequate training invascular scanning techniques, physiological testing as well as havean in-depth knowledge about vascular disease.

Aminimum of two years training is required for a vasculartechnologist trainee to be competent in all aspects of vasculartesting. A professional certification awarded by American Registryfor Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) as a Registered VascularTechnologist (RVT) is required at the end oftraining.

Vascular technologists work in afast-paced and physically demanding environment. Vascular studiestypically take between 30 minutes to as long as 2-3 hours dependingon the number of scansordered.

Responsibilities
  • Finger/ankle/toe-brachial pressure index studies forevaluation of peripheral arterial diseases. In relatively fitpatients, exercise ankle-brachial index can be performed todetermine the severity of claudication in the lower limb (pain inlower limb muscles as a result of impaired blood flow) when theyare on the move.
  • Arterial studies for lowerand upper extremities for evaluation of peripheral arterialdisease. For patients who present with intermittent claudication,ulcers/gangrene in the extremities etc.
  • Carotid (neck) arteries for blockages.
  • Screening and surveillance of abdominal aorta, iliac andvisceral (renal, mesenteric and celiac etc) arteries for disorderslike aneurysm (abnormally large arteries), dissection (tear in thewall of the artery), blockages in the arteries, follow-up for poststent insertion or bypass surgery.
  • Pre-operative scan for arterio-venous fistula creation(for dialysis) to determine the patency and lumen diameters ofblood vessels in the upper or lower limbs.
  • Surveillance study of arterio-venous fistula or graftwhen difficulties are encountered during dialysis eg. Increasearterial or venous pressures, difficulties in needlingetc.
  • Venous studies of the upper and lowerlimbs for deep vein thrombosis (blood clot).
  • Varicose veins/venous reflux studies for chronic venousinsufficiency, varicose veins, spider veins etc.
  • Pre-cardiac or vascular surgery screening/assessment todetermine lumen diameters of conduits for harvest. They includegreat saphenous veins, radial arteries and internal mammaryarteries.
  • Specialised vascular studies forcompression syndrome like thoracic outlet syndrome for the upperlimb, May-Thurner syndrome (compression of left iliac vein),nutcracker syndrome (compression of left renal vein), medianarcuate ligament syndrome (compression of celiac artery)etc.
  • Transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TCPO2)studies to detect viable tissue in the extremities to determinehealing of wound or determine optimum amputation level.
  • Intra-operative scanning of vessels for difficultcases.

Requirements
  • Degree in Biomedical Sciences/MedicalTechnology/Nursing/Biotechnology /Life Sciences.
  • Candidates with Degree in other majors are also welcometo apply. Candidates should have at least a Pass in A LevelsBiology and O Levels Physics.
  • Candidates withrelevant work experience in ultrasound/vascular ultrasound would bean added advantage.
  • Candidates withoutultrasound experience are also welcome to apply. A two yearson-the-job training will be provided.
  • Possessa positive, a can-do and proactive working attitude, withinitiative and flexibility.
  • Self-drivenindividual willing to learn a new skill.
