About Role

YSQ is seeking a talented and motivated Research Scientist with bioplastic development expertise to join our research and Innovation team. The candidate will be responsible for conducting R&D activities related to the development of bioplastics/sustainable innovation products. The candidate shall be responsible for formulating and develop bioplastics and sustainable products with optimal properties, such as improved mechanical properties, biodegradability, and usability.


The research scientist will work with a team of researchers and engineers to develop and optimize processes to produce seaweed/algae-based bioplastics. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in polymer chemistry, sustainable products, and bioplastic processing, as well as experience with laboratory and pilot-scale equipment.


This position will require an energetic, results-oriented person, who will thrive in a fast-paced environment where priorities can shift frequently. The multi-disciplinary nature of the research lab requires frequent interactions with Biopolymer development, product development, operation, engineering and analytical teams.


A highly organized and level-headed Research Scientist with in-depth experience in managing research, ensure projects operations run smoothly by scheduling staff, ordering supplies, maintaining health and safety protocols, as well as training lab technical and quality/control analysis/technical experts in various aspects. The role shall work closely with key senior personnel and management in understanding the needs of the company and meeting timelines in producing desired research results.


Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and lead innovation projects to develop biodegradable plastic, polymers and sustainable product materials from polysaccharides, seaweed and other bioresources.
  • Design and develop formulation to optimize the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the bioplastics.
  • Develop and optimize processes to produce bioplastics at commercial scale-up level.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and test bioplastics prototypes with desirable properties for commercial applications.
  • Evaluating the environmental impact of bioplastics/biopolymers, such as their biodegradation rates and potential for releasing harmful chemicals.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to scale up bioplastic production processes.
  • Prepare design of experiments, technical reports, know-how, and patents.
  • Keep up to date with the latest developments in bioplastics, and polymer chemistry.
  • Conduct laboratory and pilot-scale experiments to validate process improvements.
  • Contribution to project plans, timelines, and technical scope of existing and new projects
  • Documentation of experimental data, preparation of technical reports, communication of findings to relevant stakeholders
  • Compliance with health and safety rules, fire safety and internal regulations.
  • Handle and protect confidential and sensitive data with integrity.
  • Help drive company vision and initiatives within R&D Team. Other ad-hoc tasks / projects assigned by Senior Management/Board member.
  • Manages a small group of Junior associates/interns within the R&D.

Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent degree in Chemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering, Biopolymer Science, Biochemistry or related fields with 2-5 years of experience in in the synthesis, formulation, characterization, downstream processing, and testing of biodegradable plastics or related fields.
  • Experience in working with polysaccharides, seaweed/algae or other bioresources is preferred.
  • Experience with process optimization, experimental design, and process scale-up.
  • Strong background in biopolymer chemistry and polymer processing.
  • Experience in developing and characterizing biodegradable polymers and plastics.
  • Experience with characterization techniques such as FTIR, DSC, TGA, Tensile Stress, and SEM
  • Knowledge of analytical techniques for the characterization of biopolymers (e.g., NMR, LC-MS).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements for bioplastics is an advantage.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment. Collaborate with the team of researchers and engineers to advance project goals.
  • Familiarity with life cycle assessment methodologies is advantageous.
  • Strong project management and time management skills.

  • Be amenable to both lab and desk roles as needed. Flexibility in working hours as warranted by experiments is desirable.
  • Able to manage a multitude of projects and/or vendors simultaneously.

  • Expert knowledge of laboratory health and safety protocols.
  • Experience in conducting literature study, research work and new innovations independently.
  • Proper and accurate record keeping of all tests and experiments performed and ensuring timely reporting.
  • Good computer skills (MS Office).
