The Asian Schoolof the Environment (ASE) at Nanyang TechnologicalUniversity is an interdisciplinary school that aims to be a worldleader in environmental research focused on Asian environmentalchallenges. The ASE integrates earth and environmental lifescience, ecology, engineering and technology, human ecology,humanities, and the social sciences to address key issues of theenvironment and sustainability.

ProfessorRedfern's group has 2 positionsavailable:

1) Research Fellow (CarbonCapture)

We are currently recruiting aResearch Fellow who will join the laboratory of Professor SimonRedfern at the Asian School of the Environment, NanyangTechnological University (NTU), to perform in situ and operandoanalysis of the ash-derived sorbents and develop multi-scalereaction model to describe sorbent behaviour during carbon capturecycles.

The candidate will be expected tofurther increase the efficiency of the capture process by improvingthe sorbent formulation. Doing so requires an in-depthunderstanding of the sorbent behaviour over CO2 uptake-regenerationcycles under a variety of operating conditions, including thoseclosely mimicking the flue gas compositions from WtE plants andCCGT power plants.

KeyResponsibilities:
  • Procureand commission an operando XRD system(EQP01)
  • Connect and operando XRD system withexisting lab infrastructure
  • Competitivelysecure beamtimes to perform in situ and operando synchrotronexperiments at high-end synchrotron facilities (e.g. Australia, UKor US)
  • Design and fabrication of in situ andoperando cells for performing in situ and operando synchrotronexperiments
  • Perform in situ and operandosynchrotron experiments at international synchrotron researchfacilities
  • Carry out ex situ studies of sorbentmaterials at NTU
  • Carry out kineticsmeasurements of CO2 capture and sorbentregeneration
  • Develop and validate multiscalereaction models describing the behaviour of sorbent materials undera variety of operating conditions (e.g. different flue gascompositions to simulate CO2 emissions from different industrialfacilities)

2)Research Fellow (Materials Science/Materials Chemistry/ChemicalEngineering)

We are currentlyrecruiting two experienced Research Fellows whowill join the laboratory of Professor Simon Redfern at the AsianSchool of the Environment, Nanyang Technological University (NTU),to work closely with the lead PI to build the experimentalprogramme, maintain instruments and coordinate with theinternational community.

KeyResponsibilities:
  • Developlaboratory experiments to synthesise and study materials at extremetemperatures, pressure and under controlled chemicalenvironments
  • Prepare literature surveys tooutline research / technology development in thefield
  • Employ and develop experimental methodsusing high-temperature furnaces, one atmosphere gas-mixingfurnaces, diamond anvil cells as well as piston cylinderapparatus
  • Characterisation and analysis methodswill include FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, EPMA, electronmicroscopy, X-ray diffraction and XAS, and allied techniques, usingboth in-house and international synchrotron and neutronsources
  • Participate in research program,including research experiments and datacollection
  • Prepare reports and documentationsfor the research programs, and support dataanalysis
  • Assist in duties related to labsafety, documentation, training of student researchers andoutreach


JobRequirements:

  • Proficiency in either Diamond AnvilCell (DAC) high pressure experiments or Large Volume Press (LVP)high pressure experiments
